Think Outside the Box!

In this interior design project the client has always had a problem with the shape of this room and the fact that the supporting post for the second story is in the “sweet spot” of the room for a couch.

I chose this conversation sofa to fit into the corner for optimal viewing of both the television and the fireplace. The vignette of paintings on the wall is perched above a chest that will hold blankets for those colder nights. The round leather ottoman is a wonderful furniture piece that helps take the comfort of sitting on this couch up a notch. This sofa can seat up to 5 people comfortably and all can put their feet up while enjoying the great movie nights to come.

Daring to paint a different color than beige on the wall?

I’m not going to paint beige again!

But where do you start? What color do you choose? In my experience when choosing a color for the walls, you first choose a fabric that you love and choose a lighter or darker shade of the color that is in the fabric for paint. Or you can choose a color from one of the fabrics that are already in the room. Floor rugs also make a wonderful inspiration for accent walls. If there is a darker color in the rug, by pulling that color onto one of the walls into the room, it helps ground the grouping of furniture by “marrying” the rug and the wall around the grouping.

It only takes a little guts, and more importantly, paint is cheap. Have fun!

Bedside Table Lamps

One of the most interesting things that I have discovered since working as an Interior Designer is that a lot of my clients need to be guided in purchasing “reading” wattage for their bedside table lamps. I always recommend a 3-way wattage that can bring the wattage up to 150. As we age, we need to be aware of how fatigued our eyes get without proper lighting.

A 3-way wattage lamp allows for options depending on the mood you want to set for your ambient lighting in the room. 50-75-150 gives you options. 150 being the brightest reading lamp available for the optimum reading experience. I also recommend purchasing 3-way lamps in most cases when choosing lamps for any room in the home. But most importantly for reading situations.

Purchasing taller lamps is another way I can help my clients. When I see a king size bed flanked with little lamps, which is often, I always show my clients how their bed area can look so much better by putting a stack of books under their “short” lamp. By purchasing a taller lamp you not only improve the scale and balance along side a large bed, but you also do so much more in improving the reading experience.

Table Vignette

Putting a table in front of a window is a wonderful way of filling the space. Adding a lamp and chair makes it a perfect place to read a book or put your shoes on. Adding items of interest on the table top is also a wonderful way to make the area attractive to the eye. A live plant, books, and a lamp complete the vignette nicely. Using a colorful throw blanket is a simple way to repeat a favorite color in the room by drawing the eye over to the other side of the room away from the main fabric of the bedding. I love this table top because it has the balance, scale and color of the design elements.
